Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves were unceremoniously welcomed back home with a loss at the hands of the Indianapolis Indians 10-5 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, on Saturday night. Even a grand slam by G-Braves all star slugger Stefan Gartrell couldn't make a heavy dent in the run differential, as Gwinnett yielded double digit runs for the first time in more than a month. The G-Braves (59-48), after a one night stay in first, drop back into second place in the International League South at a half-game behind Durham, who was postponed by rain tonight. The Indians (57-52) remain tied for second place in the IL West with the win.

It Was Over When: G-Braves starter Erik Cordier couldn't figure it out at Coolray Field for the second straight start. He allowed the first four batters to reach, they all scored and the home team never rebounded from the 4-0 deficit - it only got larger from there.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Cordier (3-7) went 5.0 IP, allowing 8 R/4 ER on 8 H, 2 BB and struck out 2 batters in the loss. It's the second time in as many starts Cordier has allowed 8 R (8.0 IP, 16 R in last two starts). Another top Braves pitching prospect, RHP Arodys Vizcaino, showed why he's considered untouchable at the trading deadline - pitching a scoreless 8th inning that included a lot of mid-90s fastballs, a shattered bat and a strikeout.

At the Plate: Gartrell, playing RF, increased his single season Gwinnett homer record with his 23rd long ball of the year - a 5th inning grand slam. He finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Centerfielder Matt Young snapped out of his 1-for-22 skid on the road trip with a 2-for-5 night, and 1B Mauro Gomez went 1-for-3 with an RBI. New SS Tyler Pastornicky had his seventh multi-hit game in 11 games with the team so far, going 2-for-5.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Indianapolis starting LHP Rudy Owens (9-6) went 6.2 IP, allowing 5 R/ER on 8 H, 2 BB and struck out 6 batters in the win.

At the Plate: Indians 3B and former Braves prospect Andy Marte went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI to pace the visitors. Both 2B Josh Harrison (2-for-5, RBI) and 1B Matt Hague (1-for-4, 2 RBI) homered for the Indians.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on the Indians in game two of this four game series and mini homestand, Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out organizational top prospect RHP Julio Teheran (11-1, 1.67) against Indianapolis RHP Brad Lincoln (7-7, 3.81). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Fans can also follow at www.twitter.com/GwinnettBraves1, gametracker on www.gwinnettbraves.com or MiLB TV at www.MiLB.com.

Etc: After the game, children can get on the same field as their favorite Gwinnett Braves and run the bases. When they are done, families can go into the outfield have a catch, too. So stick around after the game for some good family fun.
