Mississippi Braves News Release

GREENVILLE _ Cory Aldridge, who reached base on the first of two controversial hit-batsmen to start the bottom of the ninth inning, scored on a passed ball to give the Greenville Braves a 4-3 Southern League victory over Carolina Thursday night.

The run gave the G-Braves (10-9) the second win in three games against the East Division-leading Mudcats, who had routed Greenville 20-4 a night earlier. It came in a bizarre contest in which the G-Braves did not manage a hit after the fourth inning, and loaded the bases on the ninth on two hit batsmen and a walk..

Because the teams were warned about inside pitches earlier in the game, both the hit batsmen resulted in ejections, sending Mike Flannery (2-1) to the locker room after only three pitches and sending Steve Kent from the game after one pitch to Lee Evans. After a sacrifice bunt by James Jurries, Ryan Langerhans was intentionally walked. Aldridge scored from third when a pitch from Omar Ortiz got past Carolina catcher Brandon Harper.

It marked the first time this season that Greenville was prevailed after the opponent scored first. The G-Braves, 9-1 in games in which they score first, are now 1-8 when the opponent scores first.

Carolina (16-5) outhit the G-Braves 9-6. All but two of the hits came in the first four innings, when the Mudcats took a 3-0 lead. Greenville rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, when James Jurries drove in two runs and pitcher Bret Evert knocked in another with back-to-back doubles off Carolina startter Ryan Snare.

A single by Chris Aguila and a two-out double by Miguel Carbrera gave Carolina a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Mudcats went ahead 3-0 by combining two hits, a walk and an error in the top of the fourth.

Evert allowed two earned runs in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

The teams are scheduled to conclude the series Friday with a 7:15 p.m. game that will include a post-game fireworks display. Ramon Colon (2-0) is scheduled to start for Greenville against Carolina's Clint Sadowsky (1-0). It is the last scheduled home appearance for the G-Braves until May 1, when the Mobile BayBears visit for the first of four games.
