Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- For the second straight night, the Greenville Braves' bats were silent as Tennessee Smokies pitching did not allow a single G-Brave to cross home plate. Smokies starter Rhett Parrott (5-7) went seven innings and benefited from a 15 hit barrage as Tennessee defeated Greenville 9-0 Monday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium.
The Smokies got on the board in the first inning when John Nelson drew a walk from G-Braves starter Chris Waters (2-2) and advanced to third on a Caonabo Cosme single. Bucky Jacobsen brought Nelson in with a sacrifice fly to left.
Tennessee struck again in the fifth inning with two unearned runs. Dan Moylan slapped a leadoff single to center, and Al Benjamin followed with a sharp grounder to shortstop that Kelly Johnson could not handle to put runners on first and second. Nelson came to the plate with two outs and ripped a double down the third baseline to bring the score to 3-0.
The flood gates opened up in the top of the eighth inning as the Smokies tacked on five more runs on five hits, highlighted by pinch hitter Rick Ankiel's two-run homerun off of reliever Kazuhiro Takeoka. Papo Bolivar added the final run with sacrifice fly that scored Nelson in the ninth.
Bill Fitzgerald and Richard Lewis each had two hits in the losing effort.
