G.B.L. All-Star Returning To Vipers

The Calgary Vipers announce today that infielder Jorge Mejia will return for his third season with the Snakes. In both seasons in Calgary the El Mirage, Arizona resident has been named a Golden Baseball League All-Star. Last year Mejia was an integral part of the G.B.L. Championship team as he hit for a .424 batting average, knocked in 8 runs, and scored six times in eight playoff games. During the regular season the 28-year-old finished sixth in the league in both hits (102) and stolen bases (24), ninth in walks (39), tenth in batting average (.341), 11th in runs scored (64) and 12th in on-base percentage (.425).

In 2008 the 6'0" 190-pounder also had a fantastic postseason hitting for the same .424 batting average, scoring eight runs, smacking two home runs and five doubles, while walking four times in eight games. During the regular season the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native finished 3rd in the league in walks (55), 3rd in games played (86), and 1st in Second Baseman Fielding Percentage (.970).

Before joining the Vipers the switch hitter spent two years in three independent leagues after seven seasons in the Oakland Athletics and Cincinnati Reds' organizations. This year will already be Jorge's 12th professional season.

The Calgary Vipers open training camp on May 8th with workouts at Foothills Stadium. From May 11th - 13th the Vipers travel to Kamloops, British Columbia to host a baseball clinic followed by two preseason games against the Victoria Seals. On May 15th the team is hosting a Meet & Greet and serving up a BBQ Burger Cook-off at the Main Dish in Calgary. The Vipers open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on May 19th with a seven game road-trip through Yuma and Tucson, Arizona.

Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
