Fury FC Defender David Edgar Selected for Canada for CONCACAF Nations League Qualifying
October 2, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - Fury defender David Edgar has been named to the Canadian Men's National Team squad for the first home match of 2018-2019 CONCACAF Nations League qualifying on Tuesday, October 16.
"This announcement comes as no surprise knowing that he has the qualities of an international player," said Fury FC General Manager Julian de Guzman. "It's great to see him bounce back from his knee injury and to find his ability to preform at this level."
Representing his country will be a familiar honour for the Canadian International, who has made 42 senior appearances for the Canada (37 starts), including the 2013 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup squads, scoring three goals. He also served as an alternate captain of the Canada youth national teams that qualified for the 2003 and 2005 FIFA World Youth Championships, as well as the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
"I'm buzzing, obviously. It's very important for me to be involved with the National Team and I'm very passionate about it," said Edgar. "To be back playing in Canada and getting that call, it's pretty special."
Edgar, who had most recently suited up for Nashville SC in the USL before joining Fury this year, has a wealth of experience in the English leagues - with the likes of Newcastle United, Burnley FC, Swansea City, Birmingham City and Sheffield United - with 211 appearances, almost 16,000 minutes played and nine goals in England's top divisions.
"We want to play for the fans and win for the fans, it is that simple," said John Herdman, Canada Soccer's Men's National Team Head Coach. "We hope the fans can join us on our journey towards the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar."
Canada will face Dominica in Matchweek 2 of Nations League Qualifying, the second of four matches from September 2018 to March 2019. The upcoming home match is Tuesday, October 16 at BMO Field in Toronto, with tickets starting as low as $20 (plus applicable fees) via Ticketmaster.ca or by phone at 1.855.985.5000.
