Fury continue winning ways

October 27, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release


LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- The Muskegon Fury remain as the only undefeated team in the United Hockey League (UHL) after the second week of play. The defending Colonial Cup Champions have not lost since last season. After winning the final three games of last season, the Fury won eleven straight in the playoffs. Combined with three preseason wins and four wins to begin the regular season, Muskegon is in the midst of a 21-game winning streak.

Attributing to their early season success has been the efforts of the Fury special teams. The power play unit leads the UHL with a success rate of 33.3% (7 of 21), and the penalty kill unit leads the UHL with a stingy 96.3% success rate after allowing only one power play goal in 27 opportunities. Muskegon has turned away the past 25 consecutive opponents' power play opportunities. Forwards Brant Blackned (6 points) and Robin Bouchard (5 points) are ranked one and two respectively as the leading scorers on the power play.

Outlaws Rule the West.The Kansas City Outlaws are enjoying early season success during their inaugural campaign in the UHL. Kansas City is on top of the Western Division standings. Forward Steve Yetman leads the UHL with eight assists and right wing Joe Seroski leads the UHL with eight goals. The two gunslingers are ranked number one and two respectively in UHL scoring.

The New Guys.Ninety-three rookies began week two on UHL rosters. The new guys are quickly making an impact for their clubs and on the league. Most notable is current UHL points leader Steve Yetman. Richmond's Mark Langdon is tied for the UHL lead with two game-winning goals. Richmond's Frank Burgio and Missouri's Justin Quenneville are tied for second in the UHL with a plus-7 rating. Port Huron's Chris Cloutier is second in the league with eight minor penalties. Rockford's Chris Gobert ranks second in the league with seven assists. Missouri forward Mark Odut leads UHL rookies with four goals.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Adirondack Frostbite - (1-1-2) - Picked up their first victory of the season on Sunday with 5-4 win over Elmira . Right winger Justin Kelly had a five point week with two goals and three assists.Center Bruce Gardiner needs two more points to earn 200 for his career.Defenseman Scott Drevitch needs three more goals for 200 in his career.

Danbury Trashers - (2-1-0) - Forward John Morlang leads the league with three shorthanded goals and the Trashers lead the league with a total of four shorthanded goals.Danbury notched their first shootout win in team history on Saturday as goaltender Scott Stirling turned away all five Adirondack attempts. Stirling recorded the first shutout in team history on Sunday in a 3-0 win vs. Richmond.Remain undefeated at the Danbury Ice Arena (3-0-0).

Elmira Jackals - (2-2-0) - Right wing moved into ninth place on the Jackals all-time scoring list after scoring five points for the week.Greg Hewitt currently leads UHL goaltenders in several categories, including: wins (4), minutes played (300), saves (192), and shootout wins (2).Right wing Jason Sessa is tied for second in the UHL in scoring (6 goals, 3 assists).The Jackals are tied with Rockford for the UHL lead in goals (21).

Flint Generals - (1-1-0) - Goaltender Marco Emond and the Generals shutout the Kalamazoo Wings 3-0 on Friday.Center Chad Grills is on a three-game scoring streak with three assists during that span.Right winger Mike Kinnie scored his first professional goal in Fort Wayne on Saturday...The Generals hit the road for three of their next four games.

Fort Wayne Komets - (2-0-0) - P.C. Drouin (2g, 1a), Colin Chaulk (2g, 1a), and Sean Venedam (0g, 3a) all tallied three points in Friday's win over Port Huron. It was the second consecutive game that Drouin has recorded three points. Chaulk then notched three points in Saturday's win vs. Flint to give him back-to-back three-point efforts.The Komets entertained 10,012 fans in Saturday's home opener.Kevin St. Pierre is tied for the lead among UHL goaltenders with a 2.00 goals against average.

Kalamazoo Wings - (1-1-0) - After recording two assists on Saturday, center Yannick Carpentier moved into a tie for 10th on the K-Wings all-time UHL assists list and ninth on the K-Wings all-time UHL scoring list.Right wing Tyler Willis is nine points shy of 200 for his career and defenseman Daniel Carriere is five points shy of 100 for his career.Center David Struch netted a hat trick on Saturday vs. Port Huron. K-Wings will host the first ever "Orange Ice Game" this Saturday vs. Muskegon

Kansas City Outlaws - (2-1-0) - The Outlaws are on top of the Western Division standings with eight points (4-1-0).Right wing Joe Seroski recorded the first hat trick in team history in Friday's win vs. Motor City. The win also marked the first road win in team history.Seroski leads the UHL with eight goals.Kansas City plays their next 12 games on the road.

Missouri River Otters - (3-0-0) - The River Otters won three straight for the first time in two seasons. Goaltender Jason Tapp tied a team record with two consecutive shutouts.Center Jim Montgomery tied a team record for points in one game by scoring five (3 goals, 2 assists) in Friday's win at Rockford. Forward Mark Odut leads all UHL rookies with four goals.Otters are undefeated at home (2-0-0).

Motor City Mechanics - (0-3-0) - Remain as the only team without a win or a point in the standings. Forwards Blair Manning (1g, 3a) and Jeff Goldie (3g) combined for seven points over the weekend. Play their next four games at home.Goaltender Rod Branch is fifth in the league with 108 saves.Kyle Kos leads UHL defensemen with three power play assists.Kevin Hansen is tied for first among UHL defensemen with one shorthanded goal.

Muskegon Fury - (2-0-0) - Remain as the only undefeated team this season (4-0-0). Including last regular season, playoffs, and preseason, the Fury have won 21 consecutive games.Have outscored opponents 11-2 in the second period this season.Rank first in the UHL on the power play (7 for 21) and the penalty kill (26 for 27). Right wing Robin Bouchard played his 500th game in a Muskegon sweater on Saturday.Lead the league with a goals against average of 2.00.

Port Huron Beacons - (0-3-0) - Left wing Trevor Edwards notched his first professional goal in Friday's loss vs. Fort Wayne. Left wing David Wyzgowski notched his first goal as a professional in Sunday's 4-6 loss to Kansas City.David Beauregard is currently riding a three-game scoring streak notching three goals and two assists during that span..Defenseman Chris Cloutier is second in the UHL with eight minor penalties.

Quad City Mallards - (0-2-0) - Paul Gillis is three victories away from becoming the first Mallard coach to win 200 games.Goaltender Robert Gherson made his professional debut on Saturday vs. Missouri. Forward Jason Deskins three-game scoring streak was halted in Saturday's 3-0 loss to Missouri. Deskins tallied two goals and two assists during the first three games of the season.Goaltender Jeff Reynaert played in his 100th professional game last week and needs one more win to move into a tie for third on the Mallards all-time wins list

Richmond RiverDogs - (2-1-0) - Richmond had their three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday in a 3-0 loss to Danbury. Wingers Francis Belanger and David Brosseau had their four-game scoring streaks halted on Sunday.The Dogs are 6-1-1 all-time in the month of October.Have killed off 19 straight power play opportunities by their opponents.Center Mark Langdon scored his first professional goal in Friday's 3-1 win vs. Adirondack.Fired a season-high 21 shots on goal in the 2nd period Saturday at Elmira

Rockford IceHogs - (1-1-0) - Tied with Elmira for the league lead in goals (21).Averaging a league best 5.25 goals per game.Lead the league with 38 assists and 59 points.Winger Chris Gobert has a point in each of the IceHogs first four games and has three multi-point games.Forwards Eric Labelle and Terry Harrison each have four-game point scoring streaks.Netted four power play goals in Saturday's 6-2 win vs. Motor City. The two teams combined for 19 power play opportunities.
