Franck Tayou scored three times, and Juan Carlos Gonzalez scored twice as the Ontario Fury moved into fourth place in the Western Conference with a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Sockers on Monday afternoon at Toyota Arena.
The Fury took an early advantage thanks to a counter attack on a power play. With Guerrero Pino in the box, Juan Topete broke out with the ball on the left wing and sent the ball off the boards in the corner. The ball bounded in front, just out of the reach of San Diego goalkeeper Boris Pardo and onto the foot of Justin Stinson, who slotted it through Pardo's legs for a 1-0.
San Diego tied in on a power play of its own. The Sockers were awarded a shootout attempt after Gonzalez was whistled for pushing. Hiram Ruiz's shootout attempt was turned away by Chris Toth, but the ball bounced to Slavisa Ubiparipovic, who put it past the rushing Ontario defense.
Ontario scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the half. Another early quarter power play put the Fury up 2-1, as Maicon de Abreu found a seam in the Sockers penalty area and took a pass from Gonzalez, turned and scored. Tayou scored his first of the game later in the quarter, as he took a pass from Jesus Pacheco and tucked it in the near post and a 3-1 lead.
Meanwhile, the Fury defense was keeping San Diego's potent offense at bay. Toth was credited with nine saves, while Fury players blocked 14 more shots by the Sockers.
Ontario scored its third power play goal of the game to extend its lead in the third. Tayou took a pass from de Abreu to make it 4-1. But San Diego answered 28 seconds later, as Leonardo de Oliveira finished a pass from Ubiparipovic on a free kick to make it 4-2. The Fury got the three-goal lead back before the end of the third, as Gonzalez scored his first of the night, putting a shot in the upper corner after Nestor Hernandez won the ball out of the San Diego corner.
San Diego's Raymundo Contreras scored just 38 seconds into the fourth, but that was all they could get. Gonzalez deflected home a shot from Tayou at the back post, and then Tayou put one in against the sixth attacker.
The Fury will be back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday as they host the Dallas Sidekicks at Toyota Arena. Tickets are available at the Toyota Arena box office, online at Ticketmaster.com or through the Ontario Fury's office by calling 909-457-0252.
