Frost Heaves Roll Into Semis

March 28, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

Quebec City, Quebec, Canada-The Vermont Frost Heaves used consecutive three-point baskets from All-Star Antonio Burks to build a 9-2 lead and never looked back in a 118-93 quarterfinal defeat of the San Francisco Rumble in the ABA Final 8 Championship at the Pavillon de la Jeunesse.

Burks, a member of last season's ABA Champion Frost Heaves, finished with 25 points, including 7 of 9 from beyond the arc. Issa Konare added 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwayne Lee scored 13 and B.J. Robertson, Markus Austin and Dokun Akingbade each chipped in 11.

The Rumble forced 24 turnovers and collected 25 offensive rebounds. But Vermont made up for those lapses by holding San Francisco to a miserable 7-for-33 on threes, while sinking 50% of their own long-distance shots.

The Frost Heaves, now 35-4, built a 16-point lead at the half. The Rumble cut it to seven early in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Derek Foster, who led San Francisco with 25 points. But from that point on Vermont closed out the Rumble with a 33-15 run.

On Saturday at 5 p.m. Vermont will play the Texas Tycoons, which overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the host Quebec Kebekwa 122-120 in last night's second quarterfinal. The Frost Heaves defeated Texas in last season's ABA title game.

Another quarterfinal doubleheader is set for tomorrow, with the Manchester Millrats and Montreal Royal meeting at 5 p.m., and the San Diego Wildcats and Atlanta Vision taking each other on at 8 p.m. Sunday's final will take place at 4 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for all sessions.

Tonight's games were not Webcast live because of technical difficulties, but the remainder of the ABA Final 8 Championship would be available free at vermontfrostheaves.com. The radio call of Frost Heaves games in Quebec will be carried over the Vermont Frost Heaves Basketball Radio Network, which includes WSNO AM 1450 in Barre and WJOY AM 1230 in Burlington, and is audio streamed over vermontfrostheaves.com.

The Frost Heaves Official Team Sponsors are VSECU and the Vermont Army National Guard.
