Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Two teams with plenty on the line face off Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place in one of nine games on tap in the Western Hockey League.
Winners of four straight and eleven of their last 12 games, the Brandon Wheat Kings enter the weekend sitting tied atop the WHL's Eastern Conference with the Saskatoon Blades. At 41-16-1-3, the Wheat Kings and Blades share top spot with 86 points each. The Blades, however, have two games in hand going into Friday night's game against the visiting Vancovuer Giants.
As for the Regina Pats, they begin the weekend with nothing but dimming playoff hopes staring them square in the face. The Pats, who feature stars Colten Teubert and Jordan Eberle are currently seven points shy of the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. To make matters worse, Regina only has twelve games remaining and have to get past Prince Albert first before they can entertain thoughts of catching the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Swift Current Broncos currently hold down seventh place in the standings with 66 points in 62 games, followed by the Warriors with 64 in 59. The Prince Albert Raiders meanwhile are ninth with 61 points, with twelve games to play.
Friday night is the sixth meeting of the season between these two clubs, with Brandon having won four of the first five. At the Keystone Centre, the Wheat Kings are unbeaten (2-0-0) against Regina, including last week's 6-2 win at Westman Place.
During the season series, Brayden Schenn leads Brandon in scoring with three goals and 10 points followed by Matt Calvert (4-4-8) and defenceman Alexander Urbom (4-3-7). As for the Pats, Jordan Eberle and Jordan Weal lead the way with nine points each.
Calvert is one of two Wheat Kings entering the weekend leading the league with impressive 12-game point scoring streaks. While Calvert has eight goals and 16 points during that stretch, Aaron Lewadniuk is 9-4-13. Schenn meanwhile has points in eight straight games (5-12-17) to regain the club scoring lead. Despite missing thirteen games this season, the Los Angeles Kings' first round draft choice has 78 points, including 24 goals in 48 games.
Following Friday's game agains the Pats, the Wheat Kings will travel to Saskatoon for a Saturday night tilt with the Blades.
