Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons completed their last game of the year at Selland Arena in grand fashion on Sunday night as they defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 2-1, and moved within one victory of winning their first ever Taylor Cup Championship.
Fresno returned home to Selland Arena last week with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Finals series but failed to capture either Game Three or Four. The Steelheads won Game Three on Wednesday, 4-2, to climb back into the series and then evened things up with a 4-3 overtime victory in Game Four on Thursday.
That set the stage for pivotal Game Five on Sunday. Although the Falcons had a 22-9 edge in shots on goal heading into the third period, the teams were still tied at one. Falcons Captain Darren Wetherill, who had not scored a goal since last year's first round playoff loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs, blasted home a one-time slapshot 2:16 into the final frame for the game-winner.
The Falcons now return to the Bank of America Centre in Boise for Game Six on Friday, May 24, and a chance to clinch the series. If Idaho wins and staves off elimination, the Taylor Cup Finals would be decided in a seventh game for the second consecutive season. Game Seven would be on Saturday, May 25.
