New Haven County Cutters News Release
As the countdown to opening day decreases each day, the New Haven County Cutters continue to add players. Second baseman Marshall Smith is the newest addition.
The 5-10, 180-pound Smith will be expected to challenge for the everyday second base job. A Georgia native, the left-handed hitter played last season with Williamsport in the New York-Penn League and batted .277 in 26 games. He was selected in the 14th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in the 2002 draft.
Smith was the third most difficult player to strike out in 2003 in the Gulf Coast League and only struck out one out of every 9.75 at bats with Williamsport last year.
Smith brings with him a combination of both experience and youth, as he has played three seasons of professional baseball and is only 23 years old.
The Cutters start their season away from New Haven against the Quebec Les Capitales on May 26-29. The home opener is Memorial Day, May 30, at 6:05 against the Bangor, ME Lumberjacks. Season and group tickets are available at Yale Field or by calling 203 777-5636. Information also may be obtained at the newly redesigned website, www.CuttersBaseball.com.
