Fred Williams Announced as Coach for San Diego Siege

The San Diego Siege announced the hiring of Fred Williams as the team's first head coach today.
Williams brings an impressive resume to San Diego, having worked in basketball at both the college and professional level. Williams has also coached a virtual who's who of professional women's basketball players, such as Cheryl Miller, Cynthia Cooper, Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson as well as a number of All-Americans, WNBA All-Stars and USA Olympians.
"I am very excited to bring women's professional basketball to San Diego." Williams said. "This is a great opportunity for many young women in the Southern California area. I look forward to the challenge of building a championship team and am very happy to be a part of the Siege."
Williams is a familiar face in women's basketball. He worked as an associate and assistant coach at the University of Southern California from 1983 to 1991, and again as head coach from 1993 to 1997. Williams helped guide the Trojans to the 1983-84 NCAA Championship as well as two Championship Game appearances, nine tournament bids and five conference titles.
Williams has also experienced his share of success at the professional level. As the head coach for the WNBA's Utah Starzz, Williams rebuilt the last-place franchise into an 18-game winner and playoff contender. He also served as an assistant coach with the Starzz and Charlotte Sting as well as an advance scout for the NBA's Utah Jazz.
"I couldn't be happier to have Coach Williams join our team," said Siege general manager David McElwee. "His background and resume speak for themselves. The moment you meet the man, you realize his true desire is to help build up women's basketball. He is going to make this team fun to watch."
