Frantic comeback falls short in Buffalo
December 30, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Buffalo, New York: Twenty four hours after taking the ABA Champion Rochester Razorsharks to the limit, the Cape Cod Frenzy found themselves on their heels against the 5-7 Buffalo Silverbacks.
The Frenzy fell behind by as many as 35 points in the third and fourth quarter but mounted a frantic and furious comeback in the final 5 minutes of the game, only to lose 118-110. The Frenzy trailed 102-72 with about 5 minutes left in the game. They managed to pull within seven points with 30 seconds left.
The comeback was carried out by the Frenzy's second unit consisting of Rashid Al-Kaleem, Sly McIntosh, Jermaine Watson, Jamaal Brooks, and Raheim Lamb. Pressure defense was the key which created alot of Buffalo turnovers and 3-D points combined with many connsecutive three point baskets.
The game started well for Cape Cod with a Frenzy steal and lay in by Steve Hailey, who was also hacked from behind and made the foul shot for a quick 3-0 lead. Byron Mouton followed with a baseline jumper to make a 5-0 lead.
Buffalo began to assert themselves on the interior, 6'10 Johnny "Spiderman" Tyson hit two connsecutive jump hooks as the Silverbacks built 18-8 lead. A turnover by Steve Hailey led to a 3-D basket and Buffalo got rolling in transition for 25-12 lead. Then they stole the inbounds pass and Tyson hit home a thunderous 3-D slam for a 28-12 lead. Both team exchanged baskets prior to the buzzer and the first quarter ended with a commanding 30-14 lead for the home squad.
In the second quarter, Frenzy Head Coach Keith Clarke seemed to be searching for the right lineup as he substituted players in and out of the game. No combination worked as the Buffalo Silverbacks blew the game wide open with a 28 point lead at the half (63-35).
Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter as they pretty much played even. Buffalo entered the fourth quarter with a 30 point lead which set the stage for the frantic comeback by the Frenzy in the final 5 minutes.
The Frenzy were led by Jermaine Watson with 20 points, Raheim Lamb who scored 17, and Jamaal Brooks with 16. The Silverbacks' Johnny Tyson had 28 points and 2006 ABA All Star guard Lamar Castile scored 24.
The Frenzy's road trip doesn't get any easier as Cape Cod travels tomorrow to Barre, Vermont to take on the 12-3 Vermont Frost Heaves at 7:00 PM. The Frost Heaves beat the Frenzy twice on Cape Cod back on November 25th and 26th by convincing margins. A second game with the Frost Heaves is scheduled for Sunday 1:00 PM, also at the Barre Municipal Auditorium.
