Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Wilmington Blue Rocks outfielder Nick Francis has been named the CL Player of the Week for the period ranging from June 13-19. It marks the second time a Wilmington position player has been honored by the league office in 2011, and the third time a Blue Rock has won an award overall. John Whittleman was also named Player of the Week in mid-May, while Elisaul Pimentel earned Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this month.
Francis batted .458 (11-for-24) with five doubles, a homer, three RBIs and eight runs scored over the seven-day stretch that led up to the All-Star break. Since returning from a three-week stint in Double-A, the Tallahassee, FL native is hitting .383 (18-for-47) with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and nine RBIs.
On the season in Wilmington, Francis has a .302 average with six homers, 30 RBIs and 18 doubles. He has worn out right-handed pitching, batting an astronomical .435 (27-for-62) on the year against righties. Defensively his arm has been a force, as he leads the Carolina League with 10 outfield assists in only 45 games.
He and the Rocks will enjoy two more days off for the All-Star break before returning to action on Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Lynchburg Hillcats at Frawley Stadium. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. when studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
