Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â Following in the footsteps of the 2002 Swamp Foxes' equipment manager, this year's manager, Johnathan Katona, was hired by the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League, the team announced today.
Katona follows Jimmy Luck, who served as the equipment manager for the Swamp Foxes in 2002, to the AFL. Luck was hired by the Georgia Force at the conclusion of the 2002 arenafootball2 season.
"I'm looking forward to moving up to the next level, but have not forgotten all of those who have helped me get to where I'm at right now," said Katona. "I'd like to thank the entire Blyth family and Coach (Rik) Richards for giving me the opportunity here in Charleston. It'll be tough to leave the Lowcountry.
Katona spent one season as the equipment manager for the Norfolk Nighthawks of the af2 before coming to Charleston.
"The job of an equipment manager is one of long and sometimes thankless hours. At this level it's hard to find someone with the dedication and commitment to doing the job and doing it well. We were fortunate enough to have someone like Johnathan to be that for a season and we wish him all the best at the next level," said Swamp Foxes' head coach Rik Richards.
A 1997 graduate of Middlesex County Vo-Tech High School , Piscatway, NJ campus, Katona also served two years in the United States Coast Guard, stationed in Hampton Roads, Va.
Following his military service, he spent time working and assisting former Portland Trailblazer Lamont Strothers and coach Bill Tose with recruitment and development of the Northrop Gruman Apprentice Basketball Program based in Newport News, Va.
The Grand Rapids Rampage franchise, based in Michigan, finished the 2003 AFL season at 8-8, but fell by one-point, 55-54, to the Detroit Fury in the opening round of last year's playoffs. The Rampage won their only ArenaBowl Championship appearance, defeating the Nashville Kats 64-42 back in 2001.
