Fox, Jones Shut Out Outlaws for Third Straight Win

Long Beach Armada News Release

CHICO, Calif. (July 31, 2009) - Ben Fox took the mound one day ahead of schedule and in turn caught the Outlaws off-guard. Fox and Rusty Jones combined to shut out the Outlaws, 3-0, on Friday night at Nettleton Stadium in Chico. Long Beach is now 6-8 in the second half of the GBL season and 26-26 overall.

Fox, who was scheduled to start Saturday's game, was pushed into the starting role tonight after the GBL announced a trade that sent starting pitcher Jose Lima to the Edmonton Capitals for starting pitcher Kris Honel.

Fox (4-5) pitched six scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one while scattering six hits. Fox hadn't received much run support in his last five outings - only six runs in five games, all of which Fox took the loss - so he made things easy by not giving up anything to the Outlaw hitters.

Matt Edgecombe doubled in the second inning, and one batter later Andy Bouchie singled to drive him in as Edgecombe slid under the tag of Chico catcher Bryan Silverman for a 1-0 lead.

Daryl Jones tripled in the fifth inning, and two batters later, Brandon Howard drove him in on a fielders choice for a 2-0 Armada lead. In the eighth, Johnny Kaplan singled to lead off the inning, stole second base and advanced to third on an error. A sacrifice fly from Omar Bramasco scored Kaplan for a 3-0 lead.

The Outlaws had a chance to get on the board in the sixth inning, but two outfield assists - one from Steve Moss and one from Jonny Kaplan - to Andy Bouchie resulted in two outs at the plate to preserve the shutout.

Rusty Jones pitched three scoreless innings for his second save of the season. Jones struck out five while walking two in his relief appearance.

Chico starter Jo Matumoto took the loss, giving up two runs off three hits while striking out six and walking two in six innings pitched.

The news of Lima's trade caught the Armada off guard. Players found out as they boarded the bus to the ballpark on Friday afternoon. Lima is scheduled to report to Edmonton on Saturday.

The Armada and Outlaws continue this three game series as Kris Honel is scheduled to make his first start as a member of the Armada on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm from Nettleton Stadium in Chico.
