Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
BOSSIER CITY-The Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings of the af2 are pleased to announce an agreement with former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints quarterback John Fourcade to become the team's new head coach. Fourcade's contract will begin on Friday, September 16.
A native of south Louisiana, Fourcade was a standout college quarterback at Ole Miss from 1978 to 1981. He went on to play professionally in the Canadian Football League and the United States Football League before moving to the NFL in 1985 with the New York Giants. Fourcade is probably best remembered by Louisiana football fans as the quarterback for the Saints from 1986-1991.
Dan Newman, BattleWings' managing partner, stated, "There is no substitute in our league for arena football coaching and playing experience. John has both. Additionally, as a former quarterback, he sees the game's intricate details both offensively and defensively. " Newman continued, "Everyone in our region knows his name and successes, both from college at Old Miss, then professionally, primarily as a New Orleans Saint. He's a 'Home-Boy,' and I think that will be well received here. I'm excited to have him lead the BattleWings."
Fourcade joins the BattleWings after several successful stints as both a player and a coach in the indoor football ranks. Fourcade spent last season as the coach of the Tupelo team in the United Indoor Football League. Before that he was the coach of the Columbus Wardogs in the af2 from 2003 to 2004. His other af2 experience includes his head coaching stint with the Florida Firecats when he led the team to the ArenaCup in 2002.
"I'm excited to welcome Coach Fourcade into the BattleWings fold," stated BattleWings General Manager Greg Little. "He brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to our organization and I look forward to building a successful team with him in 2006."
Fourcade will take over for Keith Barefield, who resigned after a disappointing 3-13 campaign. The BattleWings will be entering their 6th season in Shreveport-Bossier in 2006.
