Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - Five early runs were too much overcome as the Joliet JackHammers (19-22) fell 5-2 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-18) Saturday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are now a season low three games under .500 and will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow at 5:10 p.m.
The Fish pushed four across the plate against Bear Bay (3-3) in the second frame, sending nine hitters to the dish. Justin Justice led off with a double and scored on a Luis Alen single. Price Kendall doubled home a run and Wes Long collected a two run single for the 4-0 lead.
Jon Nelson put the JackHammers on the board in the bottom half with his tenth home run, a solo blast to left field off Zach Baldwin (1-0). Baldwin, making his first start of the season, left after five innings allowing the one run on three hits.
The JackHammers threatened late in the game, stranding seven runners the final four frames. Brad Correll singled home Freddie Thon in the sixth to make it 5-2. Chris Colton singled to put runners at first and second with one out, but Joliet could not push across a run.
The Goldeyes flirted with danger again in the seventh. Ian Thomas walked Rafael Mendez, who pinch hit for Joe Billick, to lead off the frame. Mendez was caught stealing and Jonathan Wyatt followed with a single up the middle. Kevin Rios collected a base hit to bounce Thomas. Chad Benefield entered and induced a double play ball off the bat of Freddie Thon.
Drew Shetrone came on in the ninth and earned his second save of the series against his former club, allowing a leadoff double to Roberto Mena before retiring the next three in order.
Bay settled down allowing the five early runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Mike Rocco and Griffin Bailey each tossed a scoreless inning of out the bullpen.
Correll and Thon each had two hits with Correll picking up his 19th run batted in of the season.
The JackHammers will look to snap the four game losing streak and avoid the sweep tomorrow as Devin Anderson (1-1) takes the bump opposite Antony Bello (1-3). Game time is set for 5:10 p.m. with a 5:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
