Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (JULY 22, 2014) - The Generals (13-18, 44-56) snapped their three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Huntsville Stars (16-16, 62-40) Tuesday night. Jackson picked up all their runs in the first two innings and received another quality start from Tyler Olson (5-5, 4.50) to earn a split in the first two games of the series.
Jackson took the early lead for the second night in a row. With one out in the first Ketel Marte (2x4, R, 2B) doubled and came around to score the game's first run on a single from D.J. Peterson (1x3, R, 2 RBI). Julio Morban (1x4, R) followed with a single and Peterson went all the way to third, drawing a throw from the outfield to allow Morban to advance to second. Both runners scored as Pat Kivlehan (2x4, R, 3B, 2 RBI) hit his fifth triple in a Jackson uniform and Kivlehan scored on a sacrifice fly from Dario Pizzano (0x1, RBI, BB). The explosive inning gave Jackson the early 4-0 lead.
The Generals added to their lead in the second as Peterson brought home Leon Landry (1x4, R) with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-0 after just two innings.
From that point Olson settled in. He went 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits, struck out one and a fifth inning two-run home run by Hainley Statia was the only blemish of his night. Olson picked up his fifth win of the year and second in-a-row. Mayckol Guaipe (1-2, 7 SV, 2.34) earned his seventh save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Jacob Barns (2-5, 4.85) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. After the first two innings he settled down, striking out seven Generals and at one point he retired 12 in-a-row. But he could not recover from the four-run first in the loss.
Marte, Kivlehan and Kevin Rivers (2x4, 2 2B) led the way as each had two-hit games. Marte and Rivers each had doubles as Rivers had two two-baggers on the night. Leon Landry had a hit and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Kivlehan probably had the biggest, however, a two-run triple that gave his team an early 3-0 lead.
The Generals and Stars will play the middle game of the series on Wednesday. Jackson will send Stephen Landazuri (4-2, 3.38) to the mound and he will be opposed by Eric Marzec (1-2, 3.89) who comes out of the bullpen to start for Huntsville. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
