Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons dropped their series opener against the Jacksonville Susn by a score of 4-1 Tuesday evening in front of 3,157 fans at The Baseball Grounds In Jacksonville.

In his longest outing since joining the Barons, Scott Carroll (0-2, 9.00) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits over 4.2 IP. However, he baffled the Suns over the first four innings before a pair of triples by Danny Black and Derek Dietrich led to four runs in the fifth inning.

Suns starter Anthony DeSclafani (4-3, 3.65) was dominant for most of the night, allowing just one run on five hits over 7.0 IP while striking out eight. The lone blemish came on a solo home run by Dan Black in the seventh inning, his 14th long ball of the season.

In his first appearance with the Barons since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2012, Henry Mabee allowed two hits and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings. Cody Winiarski, one of the top closers in the Carolina League this season while with Class A Winston-Salem, stuck out three over 2.0 scoreless innings in his Double A debut.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 70-51 and 26-25 in the second half while the Suns improved to 64-53 and 30-20 in the second half.

The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as RHP Chris Beck (0-1, 4.50) takes the hill against LHP Adam Conley (11-5, 3.38). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CDT.
