November 12, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Fayetteville Patriots News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., November 12, 2003 â Fayetteville Patriots coach Jeff Capel and assistant Sam Worthen released four players on Wednesday. One of the cuts assured one player in Patriots camp a roster spot for Opening Night.
Capel and Worthen released Nick Neumann, Chudney Gray, Larry Reid and Patrick Pope. Pope's release guaranteed Greg Stevenson, a Fayetteville Seventy-First High graduate, a roster position coming out of Patriots training camp.
Pope and Stevenson were both assigned to the Patriots as allocated players. Allocated players are players who have regional ties to a particular NBDL market. At least one allocated player must make the Opening Day roster.
Stevenson led Seventy-First in scoring (19.3) and the Mid South conference in rebounding (9.8) as a senior. He was also first-team All-Mid South and made the state's East-West All-Star boys basketball game his senior season. Stevenson has spent the majority of his professional basketball career overseas after graduating from the University of Richmond in 2001.
Pope, a 6-foot guard from Clinton, Md., played college basketball at Division II St. Augustine's College in Raleigh. He is the Falcons' all-time leading scorer with 1,945 points, and was named first-team all-CIAA three times during his career. He scored 41 points in the second half of the semifinals of the 2003 CIAA tournament against Virginia Union. Pope's local appeal also included his ties with Fayetteville State University, which plays in the CIAA.
Larry Reid played with the Charleston Lowgators, Roanoke Dazzle and Mobile Revelers of the NBDL in 2002-03. He averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 assists in 32 total games. The Los Angeles Clippers invited Reid to their training camp in 2002. Reid finished the final two years of his collegiate career at Kansas State.
Gray also has NBDL experience although it's only one game with the Lowgators. He played in the USBL this summer and averaged 12.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 13 games.
Neumann played the final three seasons of his collegiate career at Florida Atlantic after starting at Binghamton. As a senior, averaged 6.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots.
The Patriots roster stands at 12. The Patriots must be down to 10 players by the start of the season on Nov. 22 when they face the Roanoke Dazzle at the Crown Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. The Patriots face the Michigan Wolverines at 7 p.m., Friday at Crisler Arena.
