Flight Hosting Read to Achieve Events

GREENVILLE, S.C., November 11, 2003 – The National Basketball Development League’s third annual Read to Achieve Week swings into high gear with NBDL players, coaches and mascots interacting with school children from their respective markets in full force over the next three days..

On Wednesday, five Charleston players, assistant coach Kelvin Upshaw and team mascot Al Lowgator will conduct a Reading Timeout at Windsor Hill Elementary School. The Fayetteville Patriots will host area students at the morning practice before holding a Reading Timeout and then hosting a luncheon for students, players, coaches and staff. The Roanoke Dazzle will start the day with 100 sixth-graders at William Bryant Middle School for the Student Achiever Kickoff.

On Thursday, the Columbus Riverdragons will host area students from River Road, Downtown, Fox, Hannah and Chattahoochee Elementary schools at the morning practice before assistant coach Rob Werdann administers the "Read to Achieve Pledges". Asheville Altitude players, coaches and staff are hosting almost 100 kids from the Buncombe County After School Program for a combination Reading Timeout and Media Day at the Asheville Civic Center Thursday afternoon.

The Huntsville Flight hosts a combination Read to Achieve and Media Day on Friday to close the weekÂ’s activities. Three-hundred area youth from the James A. Lane Boys and Girls Club will observe team shoot-around and media day activities before the unveiling of the new team logo. Students will then divide up into stations for reading, coloring and crossword puzzles.

The Dazzle began the week with almost 500 children from local after school programs breaking into reading groups with Dazzle players at the Roanoke Civic Center Auditorium.

Read to Achieve is a year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children. Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports.
