Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. â Trevor Karasiewicz tallied two goals and three assists to lead the Winston-Salem Polar Twins to victory over first-place Knoxville 6-3 in Southern Professional Hockey League action Friday night. Jomar Cruz got the win in net for the Polar Twins with 37 saves.
Geoff Rollins' fifth goal of the season put the Polar Twins up 1-0. Rollins collected the loose puck in front of the net and slid the puck under the pads of Knoxville goaltender James Ronayne for the goal at 12:51 of the first period. Karasiewicz and Rhett Dudley were credited with the assists on the tally.
In the second period, the Polar Twins put forth an explosion of goals, scoring four to tie the club record for goals in a period which was set on December 10 when the Polar Twins defeated the Huntsville Havoc 5-1.
Steve Lajoie made it 2-0 Winston-Salem, netting his fourth of the season only 40 seconds into the second frame. The initial shot was stopped by Ronayne but the rebound squirted out to Lajoie who was wide open at the right goal post.
Shaun Aebig's shorthanded tally at 16:08 of the period made it 3-0 Winston-Salem. Karasiewicz collected a turnover by Ronayne, missing on the initial attempt from the short side and then circling the net for a second shot. Ronayne made the sprawling save but Aebig was in perfect position to drill home the rebound for his tenth goal of the season.
Knoxville cut the Polar Twins' lead to one with two quick goals by K.C. Caudill, both on the power play, for a 3-2 game. It would not stay that way long, however, as the Polar Twins scored two more within the last 1:02 of the middle frame for the 5-2 lead. Karasiewicz connected with Gallant who slid the puck behind Ronayne and into the front corner of the net for his 12th goal of the season and a 4-2 game. Karasiewicz added one of his own just 28 seconds later to give the Polar Twins a three goal advantage.
Knoxville netted one more, Caudill's third of the game, at 16:10 of the third period but Karasiewicz put in an empty netter for his second goal of the game to put the game out of reach at 6-3.
These two teams face off again tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. All tickets are $5 for the New Year's Night contest and are available from the LJVM Coliseum Box Office on a first come, first served basis.
