Four-Goal First Period Stake Petes to Victory

PLYMOUTH - Tony Romano scored two goals and an assist and Jason Missiaen stopped 38-of-39 shots as the Peterborough Petes raced to a 4-0 first period lead and defeated the Plymouth Whalers, 6-1, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

Peterborough is now 13-15-0-1. Plymouth had a two-game winning streak snapped and is now 9-13-3-0.

Besides Romano's pair (14th and 15th of the season), Peterborough received single goals from David Quesnele (3rd), Yves Bastien (7th), Ryan Spooner (11th) and Sergey Korostin (3rd) and two assists each from Zack Kassian and Jamie Doornsbosch. Patrick Lee (5th) scored Plymouth's lone goal, assisted by Tyler J. Brown and Tyler G. Brown.

Peterborough took control of the game early, getting first period goals from Quesnele at 2:47 (deflection of Doornsbosch's point shot), Bastien at 7:00 (shorthanded goal, hard shot left wing), Spooner at 13:37 (deflection of Pat Daley's low point shot) and Korostin at 15:25 (one-timer from the slot after accepting Romano's right wing pass).

Trialing 4-0 in the second period, Plymouth battled back but Missiaen stopped 23-of-24 shots for the Petes and Romano scored at 4:07 and 9:18 respectively to give Peterborough at 6-0 lead midway through the game. Lee got one back for Plymouth at 16:28, scoring on a scramble in front of the Peterborough goal and roofing the puck past Missiaen. The third period was scoreless.

Plymouth outshot Peterborough, 39-30.

Plymouth is off until next Thursday when they play in Peterborough and Friday in Oshawa before returning home next Saturday to host Sault Ste. Marie at 7:05pm at Compuware Arena. The Whalers are having a food drive next Saturday. For every nonperishable food item a fan brings to the game, they will receive a coupon good for $2 off a ticket to a pre-selected Whalers home game.
