Four Former Dragons on Final WBC Rosters

Dayton, Ohio-Final rosters for the 16 teams competing in the second World Baseball Classic were announced last night and featured four former members of the Dayton Dragons.

Former Dragons first baseman Joey Votto (Dragons '03-'04) will play for Team Canada in the WBC. Pitcher Johnny Cueto (Dragons '06), will compete for the Dominican Republic. Pitcher Alexander Smit (Dragons '07) will play for the Netherlands. Outfielder Chris Denorfia (Dragons '02) will be a part of Team Italy.

Votto and Cueto are currently on the Reds' major league roster while Smit is in the Reds' minor league system. Denorfia is with the Oakland A's.

The World Baseball Classic will take place from March 5-23. The WBC is held every three years. Japan won the inaugural Classic in 2006.

Among players headlining the American roster are Boston Red Sox second baseman and 2008 American League MVP Dustin Pedroia, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, Cleveland Indians centerfielder Grady Sizemore, Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan, and New York Mets third baseman David Wright.

Notes: Rosters can include up to 28 players...The rosters for the United States and the Dominican Republic are made up entirely of major leaguers...Former Reds manager Davey Johnson will manage Team USA...All 39 games in the WBC will be televised by either ESPN or the MLB Network.
