BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - David Huckalo's power play goal with 2:53 remaining in the game powered the Fort Wayne Komets to a 4-3 International Hockey League triumph over the Bloomington PrairieThunder before 2,572 people Sunday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for the PrairieThunder and dropped its record to 27-29-1-4 (59 points). The PrairieThunder returns to action Friday with a 7:05 p.m. home game against Kalamazoo.
Fort Wayne scored two first period goals. Rick Varone netted the first one just 1:43 into the game on a power play with assists to Olivier Legault and Leo Thomas.
Four minutes later, Thomas scored on assists by P.C. Drouin and Danko Mironovic. The PrairieThunder then stormed back with two goals to tie the game in the second period.
Defenseman John Neal had the first goal with assists to Brett Holmberg and Mike Kusy with 10:01 remaining in the second period. Jon Booras added the game-tying goal 20 seconds later off assists by Jan Jas and Henry Kuster.
Fort Wayne regained the advantage when Kevin Bertram scored with 9:02 left in the second period off an assist by Guy Dupuis. But the PrairieThunder knotted the score with 3:03 to go in the second period on Booras' second goal on a power play with assists to Jason Lepine and Jas.
That set the stage for Huckalo's game-winning goal off assists by Jake Pence and Rod Aldoff.
The victory moved Fort Wayne's record to 34-17-3-8 (79 points).
Bloomington goaltender Jason Wolfe stopped 25 of 29 shots, while Sebastian Laplante earned the victory by swatting away 22 of 25 shots. Fort Wayne was 2 of 7 on the power play and the PrairieThunder was 1 of 5.
