Fort Wayne doubles up Bloomington, 4-2

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fort Wayne scored two goals in each of the first two periods and made them stand up in a 4-2 International Hockey League victory Sunday over the Bloomington PrairieThunder before 6,651 people at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

The loss dropped the PrairieThunder record to 27-32-1-4 (59 points), while Fort Wayne improved to 37-17-3-9 (86 points). Bloomington returns to action Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. game against Muskegon at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Fort Wayne scored 3:38 into the first period on a Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn goal off an assist by Leo Thomas. Bloomington tied the contest on rookie Russ Smith's goal with 12:38 remaining in the first period on a power play off assists by Brett Holmberg and Mike Kusy.

The Komets regained the lead for good with 10:39 left in the first period on a power play goal by Konstatin Shafranov with assists to David Huckalo and Mathieu Curadeau.

Rick Varone and Brian Boulay scored second period goals for the Komets. Varone's goal came with 12:47 left on an assist by Justin Pence. Boulay's goal happened at the 5:07 mark with assists to Keith Bertram and Huckalo on a short-handed effort.

Bloomington scored the game's final goal with 5:03 left in the game when Jason Lepine found the net for the first time this season after missing most of the year with a torn ACL. He was assisted by Jon Booras and Smith on the power play.

The Komets outshot the PrairieThunder, 34-22, and was successful on 2 of 8 power plays. Bloomington was 1 for 3 on the power plays. Jason Wolfe took the loss in net for the Thunder and Nick Boucher got the win..
