ST. PAUL, MN (May 1, 2014) - In the past few seasons the Minnesota Twins have found success through the St. Paul Saints, purchasing the contract of a few players with one reaching the Major Leagues, pitcher Caleb Thielbar. The Saints are bringing in a former Twin to pass along his knowledge to the team, hiring Al Newman as a Special Instructor.
The 53-year-old Newman will join the Saints when camp opens up on Saturday, May 3 and will work with hitters, infielders and coach third base. Newman will stay with the Saints through their first homestand on Sunday, May 18. After that he will begin preparing for his second season as manager of the Alexandria Blue Anchors in the Northwoods League.
"I am excited to have Al join us," said Saints Manager George Tsamis. "He brings alot of experience and knowledge. He is really going to be helpful to our guys and I am glad he is with us."
Newman is a two-time World Series Champion with the Twins in 1987 and 1991 and played in more than 850 big league games with the Montreal Expos, Twins and Texas Rangers from 1985-92. During that time he hit .226 with one home run and 156 RBI while swiping 91 bases. Newman collected one hit in two plate appearances, including a triple and an RBI, in the 1991 World Series.
Following his time as a player in Major League Baseball Newman became a manager for the Single-A Fort Myers Miracle in 1995 and guided them to the playoffs. He was promoted the following season and managed the Twins Double-A affiliate, the New Britain Rock Cats, in 1996 and '97. In 1998 he became the bench coach for the Twins Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake City Buzz. Newman finished his managerial duties in the Twins system from 1999-2001 with the Gulf Coast League Twins.
When Ron Gardenhire became manager of the Twins in 2002 Newman was promoted to the Major Leagues and became the third base coach of the Twins, where he remained until 2005.
After leaving the Twins following the 2005 season Newman became an advanced scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Newman will begin his second season at the helm of the Blue Anchors in 2014. Last season he guided his team to the best batting average in the Northwoods League.
