Buffalo Destroyers News Release

(BUFFALO, NY)-The Buffalo Destroyers announced today they signed former Tuner Carroll High School star and Syracuse University product WR/DB Malik Campbell.

Campbell (6-3, 175) played one game last season for the af2’s Albany Conquest, a playoff game against Cape Fear. Current Destroyers head coach Ron Selesky signed Campbell while he was the head coach of the Conquest.

“Malik is a very talented young man," said Selesky. "He came to Albany late last season and he brought a very exciting blend of size and speed to us. He's a tremendous athlete who played two Division I sports (football and basketball) and will be a great asset to us in Buffalo."

Campbell played basketball his first two years at Syracuse before switching to football. He ranks ninth on SU’s all-time punt return yards list with 344 and seventh with 9.8 yards per return average. Campbell had 59 career receptions for 811 yards and one touchdown in three seasons for the Orangemen.

Campbell was New York State Player of the Year in football at quarterback his senior season at Turner Carroll. He was All-State in both football and basketball and was a Gatorade All-American in football.

“It’s an honor to have the chance to play football again in front of my family and friends,” said Campbell. “I would like to thank Coach Selesky for giving me the opportunity to play in my hometown and for believing in me when no one else would give me a chance.

Since finishing last season with Albany, Campbell has toured with the Upstate Developmental Basketball All-Stars, playing exhibition games against Syracuse, St. Bonaventure, Seton Hall and Vanderbilt among others.

Buffalo kicks off its fifth season in the Arena Football League Saturday, February 1, 2003 as the Destroyers host the Grand Rapids Rampage at the HSBC Arena. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Season tickets are on sale now. Call 881-4444!
