Former Stone Crab Yonny Chirinos Makes MLB Debut

Former Charlotte Stone Crabs RHP Yonny Chirinos made his Major League debut for the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, becoming the 43rd former Charlotte player to reach the Majors.

Chirinos is the 27th former Stone Crab to debut with the Rays and the 28th pitcher overall to reach the Show (18 with Rays).

The Bachaquero, Venezuela native turned in four scoreless innings in the Rays' 2-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out Blake Swihart, J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts.

Chirinos debuted with the Stone Crabs on May 12, 2015, going three scoreless innings over two relief appearances. During two stints with Charlotte the following season, he went 6-1 with a 2.15 ERA over 50.1 innings. Chirinos was promoted to Double-A Montgomery on June 23, earning a spot with the Rays less than two years later.

Chirinos joined former Charlotte pitcher Ryan Carpenter to make an MLB debut on Sunday. Carpenter, who logged 117.2 innings for the Stone Crabs in 2013, worked three innings for the Detroit Tigers in their 8-6 loss to Pittsburgh.
