Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Former Stampede forward Drew Akins has been named captain of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. Akins spent the 2005-06 season with the Herd recording 34 points (15g, 19a) while playing an integral role in the Stampede's march to a franchise best record (43-13-4) and it's first ever Anderson Cup championship.
A native of Excelsior, MN, Akins has been a fixture on the Bulldog front line the past three seasons, including in 2008-09 when he collected five goals and 10 assists for a career-high 15 points while taking part in all 43 games and helping guide the Bulldogs to a WCHA playoff title. He also had a pair of power play tallies to his junior-year credit and topped UMD in both penalties (33) and penalty minutes (82).
Akins becomes the second former Stampede player to be named captain of the Bulldogs. Andrew Carroll (2003-05) served as a captain for three seasons with UMD (2006-09). Akins and the Bulldogs posted a 22-13 overall record last winter and advanced to the finals of the NCAA West Regional.
Including Akins there are four former Stampede players on the UMD roster for the upcoming season, the others are: Scott Kishel (2007-08), Jack Connolly (2007-08) and David Grun (2006-08).
