Former SkyChiefs SS Izturis Awarded Gold Glove

SYRACUSE (NY) - For the second straight day a former Syracuse player was awarded with their first ever Rawlings Gold Glove. Tuesday Blue Jays Outfielder Vernon Wells brought home the honor in the American League; Wednesday Los Angeles Dodgers Shortstop Cesar Izturis brought home the award in the National League.

Izturis, 24, earned his first Gold Glove Award and became the first Dodger shortstop to take home that award since Maury Wills in 1962, the year that Dodger Stadium opened. The Venezuela native ranked third in the National League among shortstops with a .985 fielding percentage, just .01 behind the league leaders. He committed 10 errors in 159 games, equaling his career low in that category which he had previously accomplished in 135 games in 2002 for Los Angeles. Izturis also led all big league shortstops with a .811 zone rating, which measures the percentage of balls fielded by a player in his typical defensive zone, as defined by STATS, Inc.

Izturis spent a majority of the 2000 and 2001 seasons with the SkyChiefs. In 2000 Izturis led all IL Shortstops with a .981 Fielding Percentage making just 12 errors in a league leading 638 chances. In 2001 he was selected to play in the IL All-Star Game before appearing in 46 games for the Blue Jays.
