Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts completed their 2013 spring training roster on Friday, signing former Wichita State University standout Damon Sublett.

Sublett (pronounced suh-BLET) has spent the last three seasons with the New York Yankees' Double-A affiliate in Trenton, NJ. In 2011, Sublett batted .280 for Trenton in 54 games with eight doubles, seven triples, 28 RBI, and a .389 on-base percentage. A Wichita native and Northwest High graduate, Sublett has played all three outfield positions during his six-year professional career, and also owns a .957 fielding percentage in 151 games at second base. Sublett is expected to play a significant role in both the Wingnuts' outfield and bullpen.

"Damon is a local guy who lives in Wichita and played at WSU," said Wingnuts' manager Kevin Hooper. "'Sub' is going to give us a 'two-way' player, which is something I have never had as a manager. He will be an outfielder for us, as well as a key piece in our bullpen. He also has experience on the infield, which is only an added bonus."

Sublett is a .271 lifetime hitter with a .380 on-base percentage and a .420 slugging percentage in 340 professional games. A left-handed hitter, but a right-handed pitcher, Sublett has averaged 31 doubles, 12 triples, 10 home runs, 14 stolen bases, 97 walks, and 12 outfield assists per 162 games in his career. During his rookie professional season in 2007, Sublett finished third in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season A) in both batting average (.326) and on-base percentage (.426), while topping the circuit in slugging percentage (.531). Two years later, Sublett ranked second in the High-A Florida State League with 11 triples. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Sublett attended Major League spring training with the Yankees in 2010 and 2011.

Sublett was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round in 2007 following a stellar, three-year career at Wichita State. Sublett hit a combined .351 in a Shockers' uniform with 145 runs scored and 126 RBI in 180 games. In 2006, Sublett was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. As a collegiate pitcher, Sublett compiled a 0.51 ERA with 16 saves and 60 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Sublett will be the 11th former Shocker to play for the Wingnuts in the franchise's six-year history.

The Wingnuts also placed right-handed pitcher Kyle Wahl on waivers. The addition of Sublett completes the Wingnuts' 28-man spring training roster. Camp begins Saturday, May 4th. The Wingnuts' first exhibition game is scheduled for Sunday, May 5th against Friends University at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Tickets for the 2:05 p.m. game are just $7 general admission and can be purchased at the gate.
