Lubbock Renegades News Release
LUBBOCK, TX: January 8, 2008 - The Lubbock Renegades of the arenafootball2 (af2) added a local name to the 2008 roster, as the af2 assigned wide receiver Marquis Johnson to the team.
"Marquis is a kid with a bunch of potential that never had a chance to prove himself in college after a tremendous high school career," said Renegades Head Coach Rodney Blackshear. "I want to give him a chance to return to Lubbock and see if he can perform to the level that he believes he can."
Johnson is a 6'3" 218-pound wide receiver that spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Champaign, Illinois native appeared in one game with Texas Tech in 2004 and saw action in ten games during the 2005 campaign. In the ten games, Johnson caught 13 passes leading to 74 yards and a score. He transferred to Texas Tech after a pair of seasons at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. A tear in his ACL led to him redshirting in 2002, but he rebounded to appear in ten games the following season and he caught eight passes for 99 yards. The 23 year-old wide receiver was a hot recruit out of Champaign's Centennial High School, where he was all-state, a Parade All-American and a U.S. Army All-American game selection following his 2001 senior season. He completed the task despite not ever playing organized football until his junior season.
The roster addition of Johnson gives the Renegades eight players on the 2008 roster, joining Jerome Braziel (DB), Chad Jackson (WR/DB), Wali Mumin (DB), Elliot Powell (DB), Ronald Redmond (OL/DL), Moqut Ruffins (OL/DL) and Corey White (DB). Media members looking to interview Blackshear or seeking additional information in regards to Johnson's addition may contact Chris Due at 806-744-5858.
The Renegades are now preparing for the 2008 season and their second in the af2. Season ticket and corporate sponsorship information for the 2008 season is available by contacting the Renegades office at (806) 744-5858. Lubbock kicks off their second season on April 5th in Austin before hosting Oklahoma City for their home opener on April 12th at City Bank Coliseum.
