San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Thursday, March 27, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions have added more Major League Soccer experience to the team with the signing of defensive midfielder Freddie Braun, Scorpions President / GM Howard Cornfield and Head Coach Alen Marcina announced today.
"Freddie is a well-rounded holding midfielder with a background that includes playing in MLS with the Portland Timbers," said Marcina. "He also won a USL Pro championship with Orlando City this past season. He adds not only defensive steel to our midfield but creativity and technical ability going forward."
Braun, a native of Michigan, was a four-year star for the University of Louisville from 2006 to 2009 and was recently named the winner of the Chicago Fire's 2013 open tryouts. Braun appeared three times for Portland during his two seasons (2011-12) with the team and was an integral part of Orlando City's title-winning team in 2013 as he played in 22 matches and scored two goals.
"Freddie is a great addition to the Scorpions family," said Cornfield. "When I asked him 'why do you want to play here?', he looked me directly in the eyes and said 'I want to win a championship here'. That is what I want to hear; that championship mentality is what we missed last season. Alen has targeted players that are solely focused on helping the team succeed both on and off the field."
The 25-year-old, 6'0", 165lb Braun is a native of Rochester Hills, Michigan. He played for both the Chicago Fire and the Portland Timbers in the Premier Development League and his professional career includes appearances with: Portland Timbers(MLS) and Orlando City(USL Pro).
With the signing of Braun, the Scorpions' 2014 roster now has 20 total players on the squad. They are:
GK - Jeremy Vuolo, David Bingham
D - Stephen DeRoux, Greg Janicki, Adrian Cann, Julius James, Jonathan Borrajo
M - Javier Saavedra, Danny Barrera, Jeff Jennings, Richard Menjivar, Josue Soto, Freddie Braun
F - Sainey Touray, Tomasz Zahorski, Walter Restrepo, Jonathan Fana, Sam Garza, Shaun Saiko, Eric Hassli
The Scorpions will play an International Friendly against Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa at Toyota Field on April 5th and will open the 2014 NASL season on April 12th at Toyota Field against Minnesota United FC.
