Pensacola Pelicans News Release

When the 2010 Major League Baseball season kicks off in April, the Pelicans will have their second player in a big league uniform. Former Pelicans standout infielder Joe Espada was recently named the Florida Marlins third base/infield coach.

In 2006, after a successful 10-year playing career including two with the Pelicans (2004-2005) and six years in triple-A, Espada was quickly hired to become the Marlins single-A hitting instructor. In 2009, Espada was the minor league infield coordinator, working with Marlins minor league players and prospects. In 2010, he'll be with the big league club coaching third base and instructing the infielders.

Pensacola will be well represented on the Marlins staff as Cantonment resident Jim Presley is in his fifth season as the hitting coach of the big league club. Former Pelicans assistant coach Jorge Hernandez (2004-2006) is also the current Gulf Coast League Manager for the Marlins.

Espada will become the Pelicans second player to make it to the big leagues. Right-handed pitcher Edwar Ramirez played with the Pelicans in 2005 before signing with the Yankees, quickly moving up their organization. Ramirez made his major league debut on July 3, 2007 against the Minnesota Twins in which he struck out the side in the ninth inning.
