
Former IUP hoops standouts to attend Pittsburgh Xplosion camp

PITTSBURGH, October 19, 2006 - Former Indiana University of Pennsylvania teammates and Detroit, Mich. natives Lawrence Baker and Marc Williams are expected to be among those chasing their professional basketball dreams when the Pittsburgh Xplosion hold their Free Agent Camp on October 23 and Training Camp on November 14.
Williams, a 6-3 guard, will be invited to the Free Agent Camp. He joined Baker in the backcourt to help make IUP's set of guards one of the best in the country. He averaged 11.9 points, 4.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. His assist total was second in the conference and steal total ranked ninth. Averaging 33.4 minutes per game, Williams shot 46% from the field, 39% from three-point range and 72% from the charity stripe. He earned All-PSAC West Second Team honors during the 2005-06 season.
During his two seasons at IUP, Williams scored 607 points, dished out 170 assists, and recorded 72 steals. His 127 assists as a senior were the 17th highest figure in school history.
Baker will be invited to attend the Veteran's Training Camp beginning November 14. The 6-5 guard is a pure scorer who was a main component in IUP's potent offensive attack that led the PSAC in scoring during the 2005-06 season. He finished third in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.7 points per game, ranking 30th nationally at the Division II level. Baker also was in the top 10 in the PSAC rankings in three other categories. He was fourth in rebounding (7.9), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (41%) and10th in field goal percentage (52%). He captured All-PSAC West First Team honors as a senior.
In his two-year career at IUP, Baker scored 762 points for an average of 12.5 per contest. His career field goal percentage of 49.6 ranks 19th in school history and his 67 three-pointers ranks him 18th. The 580 points Baker tallied in 2005-06 are the ninth highest single season total in school history.
The Explosion will invite eight players from the Free Agent Camp to attend the team's Veteran's Camp. Both camps will be held at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. Ten players will be tabbed to the club's final active regular season roster. The team begins its inaugural season in the Continental Basketball Association on December 1 at Albany.
