Arkansas Diamonds News Release

(North Little Rock, AR) - Former Arkansas Twisters defensive specialist Kahlil Carter is returning to the team he helped lead to the playoffs to be a volunteer coach as announced by Head Coach John Gregory.

As volunteer coach, Carter will assist the coaching staff in the daily preparations of team practices, coach the defensive backs, will assist Gregory with the special teams and help with game day tasks.

"Art (Haege, Defensive Coordinator) and I had a chance to work with Kahlil two years ago when we first came to Little Rock," says Gregory. "He did a nice job and we've been looking for a chance to work him in ever since."

The former University of Arkansas and Southern Arkansas football player spent last season with both the AFL and Canadian Football League as a defensive back and wide receiver. Carter helped lead the AFL's Orlando Predators to the Arena Bowl after a mid-season trade from Nashville. He finished with over 100 total tackles, three interceptions and four total touchdowns.

Carter recently signed a two year contract to play with the Toronto Argonauts, the CFL team he played with at the end of last season. He played in 12 games and finished with 39 tackles, intercepting six passes with one returned for a touchdown.

"He's played a number of different positions and he's familiar with arena football. His strengths with the defensive backs will make us better," explains Gregory.

Carter earned af2 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2003 as a member of the Arkansas Twisters after leading the league with 14 interceptions. The Twisters advanced to their first conference championship game that year and set a team record for wins that held up until last season's run to the conference title game.

The Twisters have mainly worked with a two man coaching staff ever since Gregory took over midway through the 2005 season. "Art and I have done the whole thing and sometimes, I don't get a chance to spend a whole lot of time with the cornerbacks. Having Kahlil, it gives us more time to spend in other areas," adds Gregory.

Carter will be available as a volunteer coach until CFL camps begin later in the summer.

The Twisters are coming off their best season ever after setting a team record with 12 total victories and a birth in the National Conference championship game. Arkansas will kickoff the new season on the road on March 31st and open up their home schedule at Alltel Arena on April 28. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 501-975-KICK or logging onto www.arkansastwisters.com.
