Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, IL - Former Peoria Chiefs manager Jim Tracy was named the National League Manager of the Year on Wednesday after leading the resurgent Colorado Rockies from an 18-28 record to the postseason via the NL Wild Card. Tracy took over the Rockies on May 29 when Clint Hurdle was fired and went 74-42 over the final 116 games of the regular season before losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS.

Tracy was the Chiefs skipper in 1987 and 1988 going a combined 141-139 with players Jerome Walton, Shawn Boskie, Derrick May, Mike Harkey and Heath Slocumb. Tracy began the 2009 season as the Colorado Rockies bench coach and took over on an interim basis on May 29 when the club was 18-28 and Clint Hurdle was fired. Under Tracy the Rockies went 74-42 and won the N.L. Wild Card. Tracy has previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates leading LA to the playoffs in 2004.

Tracy became the second manager to ever win the award after taking over during the season. He received 29 first-place votes and two seconds for 151 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

The 53-year old joins Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon as former Chiefs skippers to win a MLB Manager of the Year award. Maddon was named American League Manager of the Year last year after leading the Rays to a surprising World Series appearance. Brad Mills, who managed the Chiefs immediately after Tracy in 1989, was named Houston Astros manager last month. Joe Girardi, an East Peoria native and former Chiefs player, finished third in the AL voting this year after leading the New York Yankees to their 27th World Series title.
