June 12, 2003 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Staten Island Yankees News Release
[Staten Island, NY] â The New York Yankees have reassigned their pitching coaches for their two short-season teams. Former New York Yankee pitcher, Dave Eiland, has been sent to Staten Island for Rick Tomlin. Tomlin will assume pitching coach duties for the Gulf Coast Yankees.
In addition, Staten Island has been assigned an additional coach, Torre Tyson.
Eiland joins the Yankees organization this season, his first at the coaching level. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 1987 draft. Eiland spent 10 seasons pitching in the Major League level (Yankees 1988-91, San Diego Padres 1992-93, Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1998-2000) before two Tommy John surgeries on his right elbow forced his retirement in 2002.
The right hander recorded a .650 minor-league winning percentage, compiling a 106-57 record. He was 12-27 at the big league level with a 5.74 ERA.
Eiland is married to Sandra and has two daughters, Nicole and Natalie.
This is Tyson's fourth season in the New York Yankee organization and his first as a coach. He began his professional baseball career in 1998 when he signed with the Boston Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent. After spending almost two seasons in the Boston farm system (he spent part of the 1999 season with the River City Rascals of the Independent Frontier League), he joined the Yankees in 2000.
In three years with the Yankees, Tyson spent time in Greensboro, Norwich, and Tampa. He hit .262 in his five-year minor league career, driving in 132 runs and scoring 285 times. In 2000, he was named the South Atlantic League All-Star second baseman for both the mid-season and the post-season. He hit .291 with 41 RBI and 87 runs scored that year.
Tyson resides in Columbia, Missouri.
The Staten Island Yankees, the defending NY-Penn League Champions, will begin the 2003 season on the road, traveling to Williamsport, PA to face the Crosscutters on June 17. The team's home opener will be on June 20th at 7:15 p.m.
