Former All-Star Mark Prior to Pitch for Flyers August 14

FULLERTON, Calif. (August 10, 2010) -- Newly acquired Flyers' pitcher Mark Prior will take the mound for the Flyers on Saturday, August 14, in the first game of a doubleheader beginning at 5:05pm. Prior, who signed with the Orange County Flyers last week, is a former National League All-Star who spent five years in the Major Leagues with the Chicago Cubs, helping them reach the NLCS in 2003.

The Southern California native made his debut with the Flyers last Tuesday against the Victoria Seals, retiring the top of their order in a 1-2-3 inning of relief, striking out Tim Rodriguez to end the inning.

The Cubs made Prior, 29, the second overall selection of the 2001 draft. Through his five years in the big leagues, Prior racked up 757 strikeouts over 657 innings, going 42-29 with a 3.51 career earned run average in 106 starts. In 2003, the right-hander started 30 games for the Cubs, going 18-6 with a career-best 2.43 ERA and earned a spot on the National League All-Star team. That season Prior tossed three complete games, struck out 245 batters over 211 and 1/3 innings of work, and was twice named the NL Pitcher of the Month in August and September. He finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting in 2003.

The Flyers are traveling to Yuma, Ariz., today for a road series against the Tijuana Cimarrones which kicks off a series of seven games over four days against South Division foe. The games will take place on Field 2 of Yuma's Ray Kroc Sports Complex. The teams will play doubleheaders on August 11 and 13 with a single game on August 12.
