Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks tied Wednesday night's game against the Fargo Force with a late goal, but the crowd a Scheels Arena celebrated an even later score by the home team, giving the Force a 3-2 win during the opening game of the first-round playoff series between the clubs.
On a power play with 5:08 remaining in regulation, Taylor Cammarata slapped a shot from the right point through traffic and past goaltender Brendan Jensen. The USHL's top scorer found the net without a tip, evening the game, 2-2, but it was a slight redirection which allowed Fargo to break the tie. Gabe Guertler fed a pass across the slot in the Waterloo zone with 95 seconds to go. The puck went off Dave Gust's stick and right to Austin Ortega, who slipped the puck past the left skate of Cal Petersen.
During the closing seconds of the game's first power play, the Black Hawks had moved into the lead. At 11:17 of the first period, Zach Stepan was stationed between the crease and the right wing circle and deflected an Ian McCoshen point shot over the shoulder of Jensen.
Fargo seesawed in front with two goals during a four-minute span in the mid-second period. Guertler tied the score after an initial chance bounced his way off the end glass at 9:19. In the midst of a three-on-two rush, Gust then nudged the Force ahead at 13:23 when he nudged a puck over the goal line on the rebound of a Guertler shot.
Jensen made 26 saves, while Petersen turned in 27. The margin of victory continued a trend from the regular season series; four of five games between Waterloo and Fargo on the 2012/13 calendar were also settled by one goal.
The best-of-five series continues Friday with Game Two in Fargo at 7:35PM. Tickets for Game Three in Waterloo on Sunday afternoon are available online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680. Game Three begins at 3:05PM.
