Cleveland Force News Release
CLEVELAND, OHIO â The Cleveland Force used a three goal second quarter performance to secure its third straight playoff appearance by defeating the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Chicago Storm by a final score of 7-2 at the Wolstein Convocation Center.
With the victory, Cleveland secured its 20th post season appearance in 26- years of the franchise while winning its 20th game for the first time since the 1999-2000 when the Crunch went 27-17. The Force moved to within a half game of the second place Philadelphia KiXX in the MISL standings and improved to 20-16 overall, 12-8 home, 5-2 in the season series and 34-18 all-time versus Chicago teams. With the loss, the Storm fell to 17-20 overall and 5-13 on the road.
Cleveland opened the scoring (1-0) when forward Adauto Neto stole the ball at midfield and passed it back to midfielder Gary DePalma who found a wide open defender Josh Timbers who buried the shot that bounced off the near post and in for the score at 7:17 of the first quarter. The Force added to their lead exactly two minutes later (2-0) when forward Antonio Sutton hit a low liner into the far post off the cross from forward Tamas Weisz at 9:17. Chicago cut into the lead (2-1) when forward Novi Marojevic buried a laser shot into the upper far corner after he took an attempted clear by a Cleveland defender off the boards at 11:35. The Storm tied the game (2-2) when midfielder David Schneider hit the shot off the cross from forward Awadalla Morad at 13:06.
The Force regained the lead (3-2) when Neto took an attempted clear by Chicago goalkeeper Danny Waltman off the boards and headed the ball into the empty net at 8:19 of the second quarter. Cleveland jumped back out to a two-goal advantage (4-2) when defender Genoni Martinez ran down the middle of the field and took the pass from forward Aaron Susi and hit a low liner for the score at 13:00. The Force took their largest lead of the first half (5-2) when forward and Cleveland native Allen Eller battled in the box with several shots and then chipped it in at 13:27.
The second half scoring opened on a fluke (6-2) when the Storm played a back pass on the kickoff and it went right through Waltman's legs for the score just 20 seconds into the third quarter. Neto was credited with the goal as being the closest Force player to the ball. Cleveland kept the scoring attack going (7-2) when midfielder Robbie Aristodemo nailed a shot past a diving Waltman off the second assist of the game for Susi at 13:53.
The two teams battled to a scoreless fourth quarter.
The Force will next travel to the Badger State to take on the MISL first place Milwaukee Wave on Sunday, April 17th at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
