Force storms out past Chicago for first victory of season

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Cleveland Force played host and defeated the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Central Division and expansion Chicago Storm by a final score of 9-5 at the Convocation Center at Cleveland State University.

With the victory, the Force improved to 1-2 overall, 1-1 versus MISL Central Division opponents, 1-1 in the season series and 1-1 at home. With the loss, the Storm fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 versus Eastern Division opponents and 1- 1 on the road.

Chicago opened the scoring (0-1) when Gaston Pernia found the back of the net off the cross from Andy Rosenband at 6:24 of the first quarter. The Storm added to their lead (0-2) when Matthew Stewart took a pass from Jonah Long just past midfield and beat Cleveland goalkeeper Jim Larkin for the score at 10:36.

Chicago opened the second period scoring (0-3) when Bryon Alvarez found the far post and the score off the rebound shot and assist of Ryan Futagaki at 5:36. The Storm added to their lead (0-4) when Stewart scored his second goal of the game off the assist from Novica Marojevic at 11:16. The Force cut into the lead and got their first score of the game (1-4) when forward Chris Handsor redirected a shot by defender Josh Timbers from beyond the yellow line at 12:22. The assist was the first of the season for Timbers. Handsor has now scored in every game as a Cleveland player.

Chicago opened the second half scoring (1-5) when Leo Pernia found the back of the net off the cross from Chris Carrieri at 3:26 of the third quarter. The Force cut into the lead (2-5) when midfielder Gary DePalma scored the unassisted goal at 7:03. The goal was the first for DePalma with Cleveland. The Force cut further into the lead (3-5) when forward Chris Dore found the back of the net off the second assist of the game for Timbers at 9:28.

Cleveland opened the final period scoring (4-5) when forward Sipho Sibiya scored the goal off the cross from forward Antonio Sutton at 3:44 of the fourth quarter. The Force tied the game for the first time (5-5) when midfielder Adam Campellone found the back of the net off the assist from defender Fred DeGand at 4:24. Cleveland took their first lead of the game (6- 5) when defender and team captain John Ball scored the restart goal at 4:47. The Force added to their lead (7-5) when Myles Stoddard found the back of the net off the pass from Dore at 8:48. Cleveland kept up the scoring attack (8- 5) when Sutton scored against the sixth attacker off the cross from Ball at 12:49. The Force sealed the game (9-5) when Ball scored the empty net goal against the sixth attacker at 13:23.

Cleveland will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on the MISL Central Division Milwaukee Wave on Saturday, November 13 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
