CLEVELAND, OHIO â The Cleveland Force played host to the San Diego Sockers in the fifth and final game of a five game home stand. Cleveland defeated San Diego, 10-8 in overtime in a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) game at the Convocation Center at Cleveland State University. The Force ended the five-game home stand with a record of 2-3 overall with both victories coming over the Sockers.
With the victory, Cleveland snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 13-14 overall. The Force also improved to 8-7 versus Western Conference opponents, 5-0 in the season series and 1-1 in overtime games. With the loss, San Diego fell to 12-19 overall and 5-12 on the road.
The Force opened the scoring (2-0) when Giuliano Oliviero scored a two-point goal off the pass from Chris Stathopoulos who stole the ball from the Sockers defense at 1:52 of the first quarter. San Diego tied the game (2-2) when Cleveland scored an own goal that was credited to Mark Ughy at 10:03. The Sockers took their first lead of the game (2-4) when Mariano Bollella found the back of the net off the feed from Carlos "Chile" Farias at 13:38.
The Force tied the game for the second time (4-4) when Anthony Maher scored a two-point goal off the first career assist for Mark Schulte at 5:27 of the second quarter.
San Diego snapped a 28-minute scoreless streak (4-6) when Matt Johnson scored a two-point goal off the long pass from Robbie Aristodemo at 10:28 of the third period.
Cleveland tied the game for the third time and snapped a 25-minute scoreless streak (6-6) when Joe Mattacchione scored a two-point restart goal off the pass from Steve Butcher at 1:38 of the final quarter. The Sockers regained the lead (6-8) when Ughy scored a two-point power play goal off the pass from Aaron Susi at 5:40. The Force tied the game four the fourth time (8-8) when Lee Edgerton scored a two-point power play off the pass from Stathopoulos at 10:21.
Cleveland won the game in overtime (10-8) when Oliviero scored the game-winning goal after he stole the ball from San Diego goalkeeper Nick Vorberg at 7:23.
Cleveland will next travel to the Lone Star State for the final time this season when it will play the Dallas Sidekicks in a MISL game on Sunday, February 16th.
