Cleveland Force News Release
CLEVELAND, OHIO- Cleveland Force President and General Manager Paul Garofolo announced today that the team has signed its first three selections in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Dispersal Draft that allocated players from Monterrey and San Diego. Cleveland has inked two-time MISL Defender of the Year Genoni Martinez, forward Tamas Weicz and defender Matt Johnson to contracts.
"The signing of these three players will help us at both ends of the field. Genoni brings a powerful left foot and scoring prowess to our back line, which will also help us on the power play and in restart situations. Tamas is an unknown commodity within the MISL. However he is a versatile and strong offensive player who can play target, second forward or in the midfield. Matt is a steady defender who brings us size and an upgrade to our defense," stated Garofolo.
Martinez, who was the Force first selection and the second overall pick, has agreed to terms to a two-year plus an option year contract. The 29-year old native of Mexico City, Mexico is a big strong defender who plays well both ways, as he is a key factor on restarts and power plays. Genoni appeared in six games for the Monterrey franchise this season and recorded four goals, seven assists and seven blocks. In addition, Martinez has played for the Monterrey LaRaza of the World Indoor Soccer League (WISL), the Wichita Wings in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), Detroit Rockers (NPSL), Philadelphia KiXX (NPSL) and the Harrisburg Heat (MISL).
Weicz, who was Cleveland's second pick in the draft and the ninth overall selection, agreed to terms to a three-year plus an option year contract. Tamas is eligible to make his Force and MISL debut this Saturday, January 29 versus the Baltimore Blast. Weicz, a native of Budapest, Hungary, is a big strong target forward and has been compared to Chicago Storm forward Mark Ughy.
Johnson, Cleveland's third round selection, agreed to terms to a one-year plus an option year contract on January 6. Matt made his Force debut on January 7 versus the Chicago Storm. He has appeared in four games and has recorded an assist and three blocks.
