Force rides Wave to secure second seed in playoffs, 6-4

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Cleveland Force used a three goal and two power play goal third quarter performance to defeat the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) first place Milwaukee Wave by a final score of 6-4 at the Wolstein Convocation Center during Fan Appreciation Night.

With the victory, Cleveland won a season-high tying five straight games and secured the second seed in the MISL playoffs with a shot at taking the MISL regular season title with a Wave loss on Sunday. The Force improved to 23-16 overall, 12-8 home, 3-2 in the season series and 21-28 all-time versus Milwaukee teams. With the loss, the Wave dropped their second straight game and fell 23-15 overall and 10-9 on the road.

The Force opened the scoring (1-0) when midfielder Gary DePalma took a pass at midfield and race down field and took a shot that was saved by Milwaukee goalkeeper Nick Vorberg but it bounced out to the middle of the goal area and forward Antonio Sutton tapped in the loose ball for the score at 2:24.

The Wave tied the game (1-1) when midfielder Johnny Torres stole a pass at midfield and went downfield and hit a low liner into the far post at 13:03 of the second quarter.

Cleveland regained the lead (2-1) when forward Aaron Susi hit a shot that deflected off a Milwaukee defender and in for the go ahead goal at 2:21 of the third quarter. The goal marked the 250th career point for Susi. The Force took the largest lead of the game for either team (3-1) when Susi connected on the power play off the cross from forward and team captain John Ball at 7:26. Cleveland kept the scoring attack going (4-1) when Ball scored the second consecutive power play goal off the feed from defender Genoni Martinez at 10:02.

The Force opened the final period (5-1) when forward Adauto Neto knocked home the cross from Martinez just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Wave snapped a 4-0 run by Cleveland (5-2) when midfielder Angel Rivillo buried the shot off the cross from Torres at 2:34. Milwaukee cut the lead to two goals (5-3) when defender Chris Morman hit a shot off the glass that bounced back to him and he buried the follow at 3:07. The Wave got to within one (5-4) when forward Greg Howes slide in the pass at the back post from forward Michael King at 5:41. The Force snapped a 3-0 run by Milwaukee (6-4) when Neto stole the ball in his defensive end and went all the way down the field and scored the power play goal at 9:17.
