Chicago Storm News Release
Chicago â The Chicago Storm dropped a 4-2 result to the St. Louis Steamers tonight at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, MO in the Storm's final game of their inaugural season. The loss eliminated the Storm from playoff contention as St. Louis clinched the fourth and final spot in post-season play. The Storm ended their season with an 18-21 record in the MISL.
"The team did well and fought hard," said Storm Head Coach Frank Klopas. "Unfortunately, the ball did not bounce our way and we lost a very tough game. We knew they would come out hard and try to score early and we just did not take advantage of our opportunities early. It has been a great season with a lot of great memories, but it is unfortunate that it ended earlier than we hoped."
The Storm scored the first goal of the game when forward Mark Ughy scored at 2:54 of the first quarter. Storm defender Gaston Pernia fired a pass up the middle of the field to a streaking Andy Rosenband. The Hammond, IN native collected the ball, drew two defenders to him and found Ughy with a pass as he was racing up the left wing all alone. The Hungarian forward quickly one- timed a shot past Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.
St. Louis answered at 4:14 of the first quarter on a goal by Joe Reiniger to tie the game 1-1. The Steamers took the lead for the first time in the contest when forward Cal Thomas put a shot past Storm goalkeeper Danny Waltman, for a 2-1 advantage. Thomas pounced on a rebound after Randy Soderman's shot was parried away by Waltman.
The Steamers began to pull away from the Storm as Sterling Wescott tallied twice in the third quarter. The first came at 13:37 when Daryl Doran found Wescott in the center of the Storm's penalty area, where he one-timed a shot past Waltman to make it 3-1 for the Storm. Wescott's second came with nine seconds remaining in the third stanza to extend the St. Louis lead 4-1.
Chicago cut into the St. Louis lead at 1:45 of the fourth quarter to make it 4- 2. Novi Marojevic sent a high pass in front of the Steamer's net and Nino DaSilva redirected the pass past Phillips for his 13th goal of the season.
