Force blasts past defending champs, 7-5

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Cleveland Force played host and defeated the two-time defending Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Champion Baltimore Blast by a final score of 7-5 at the Wolstein Convocation Center. The game was the first of two weekend home games for Cleveland.

With the victory, the Force won their second straight game and improved to 13- 13 overall, 8-7 at home, 2-3 in the season series and 65-69 all-time versus Baltimore teams. Cleveland moved into a tie in the MISL Standings with the idle Chicago Storm for the fourth and final playoff spot. With the loss, the Blast snapped their two-game winning streak and fell 13-16 overall and 4-9 on the road.

The Force opened the scoring (1-0) when defender Genoni Martinez triggered the restart opportunity and buried a shot that hit the cross bar and bounced back and hit the back of Blast goalkeeper and into the net for the score at 11:29. Baltimore knotted the game back up (1-1) when defender Wendell Regis scored the unassisted goal at 13:58.

Cleveland regained the lead (2-1) when forward and team captain John Ball was sitting on the back post and tapped in the cross from forward Aaron Susi for the power play goal at 8:35 of the second quarter.

The Blast tied the game for the second time (2-2) when forward David Bascome found the back of the net off the assist from forward Lee Tschantret just 25 seconds into the third quarter. The Force regained the lead (3-2) when Ball took the restart pass from defender Genoni Martinez and did a turn around on the ball and put the ball in the upper corner for his second goal of the game at 4:55. Cleveland took the largest lead of the game (4-2) when Martinez hit shot into the box and it was redirected into the back of the net off of defender Danny Kelly at 14:14.

The Force kept scoring attack going (5-2) when Martinez nailed a laser shot into the near post for his second goal at 3:10 of the fourth quarter. Cleveland added to its lead (6-2) when forward Sipho Sibiya tapped in the unassisted goal at 7:30. Baltimore snapped a 4-0 run by the Force (6-3) when Tschantret scored the unassisted restart goal at 8:00. Cleveland quickly responded (7-3) when Ball scored the unassisted goal for his third hat trick of the season and second in the last two games at 9:26. The Blast came right back (7-4) when Allen Eller nailed the shot off the cross from Tarik Walker at 10:08. Baltimore cut the lead two (7-5) when P.J. Wakefield scored the power play goal against the Force three defenders off the cross from David Bascome at 12:27.

The Force will have next play host to the expansion Chicago Storm in the second game of home weekend contests on Sunday, March 13.
