Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels have announced a press event for Thursday, February 8th at 2 PM at the historic Byrd Theater in Carytown to unveil the identity of the club's mascot as well a fashion show to showcase the look of the team's uniforms. In addition, the Flying Squirrels will recognize the winners of the club's art contest. The event is free and open to the public.
"This will truly be a very memorable event," said Flying Squirrels' VP and COO Todd "Parney" Parnell. "Our mascot is going to be very involved in the community and with our fans, and we're excited to introduce him to Richmond. We're equally as excited to show everyone what the Flying Squirrels will be wearing on the field and to feature the artists whose work will adorn The Diamond."
The Flying Squirrels will employ the services of local sports media personalities Chip Tarkenton of WRIC, Lane Casadonte of WTVR, Wes McElroy of Sports Radio 910, and Greg Burton of ESPN 950 as celebrity models for the uniform fashion show.
The team's official art contest gave elementary school students in the greater Richmond area the opportunity to have their artwork displayed permanently on the concourse at The Diamond during the 2010 season. The students created artwork based on the theme: Baseball is Funn Because. The artwork will be displayed on 15 separate 4' x 9' panels on the main concourse of The Diamond.
The press event will also feature a special performance of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" by the first grade students at Bon Air Elementary as well as award-winning, local singer and songwriter Susan Greenbaum performing the "Flight Song" inspired by the Flying Squirrels.
Built in 1928, the Byrd Theater has been operating almost continuously as a movie theater and is both a State and National Historic landmark. It is currently owned by The Byrd Theater Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation, with the interest of restoring and preserving the theater as a "viable community resource."
